Bibles

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

Today, my roommates and I were talking about different Bibles we had as children. Me and my one roommie both had Precious Moments Bibles, another had a ten guide Bible, and the last had a simple Bible with her name engraved on it.

I feel as though many children never receive Bibles these days, which is a little sad. My hope for you, dear readers, is that even if you are not religious yourself, you encourage your children to explore faith, both Christain and otherwise.

You know Christmas is coming up when you can’t turn on the radio without hearing some holiday songs, over and over and over again.

Not that I’m complaining. I love Christmas music! (Although, I have to admit, sometimes I just have to turn the station because I’m so sick of those few that are totally overplayed.

What’s your favorite Christmas song?

Welcome New Writers

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Just a quick holler to welcome the surge of new writers coming to 451 Press.

New jobs is the theme of my life right now, since I am graduating. It’s a trying time to move and have to worry about finding work. I’m going to try my hand at full time freelancing, so I pray that my efforts will be enough.

If you are also finding yourself in a new work environment, here’s some things to consider about religion:

1. Not everyone has the same religion as you. This might seem like a no-brainer, but many people fail to consider it when making comments in everyday conversation. Be sensitive to those around you who many feel uncomfortable with things like taking the Lord’s name in vain.

2. Don’t be afraid to talk about religion. If you’re having lunch with new work friends, religion doesn’t have to be a taboo subject. They might be able to give you suggestions regarding churches if you are new to the area.

3. If you want time off to observe a religious holiday, ask for it. The worst your boss can say is no.

Happy job-hunting, recent grads and happy writing, new bloggers!

A Holiday Challenge to You

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

I’m in the process of moving right now, and you know what that means–I need to look for a new local church.

Finding a new church can be scary, especially as a young, unmarried girl. When my move is finalized, I plan to visit a number of churches to find one where I’m most comfortable and can be most useful.

I was raised Lutheran, so most of the churches I plan to look into are Lutheran. I’m not ruling anything out, however. A church is nothing more than a place to worship. By going to a service, you can worship your own idea of God, even if the service is not what you consdier normal. I want to look into a number of churches of other Christian denominations, and maybe a few from some other religions as well. We’ll see.

Basically, I want a home and community where I can get involved with traditional church charity. To me, that is what getting involved with a church is all about. The worshipping is my own, no matter what the service is like.

And so, my holiday challenge to you is to visit a few other churches during this winter season and learn about how you can become a part of their community. If you do not currently attend church, my challenge for you is to choose any church in your area and simply attend a service, and then, to continue to attend services until you find a church where you fit. “Church” is human, “Religion” is god–remember that.

A Note on Being Faithful

Friday, December 1st, 2006

Just something that bugs me.

When you’re in a relationship with someone, a committed relationship, ring or no ring…please be faithful. If you can’t be, get out of the relationship!

Will somebody please broadcast this to the world?

I mean, come one, it’s not hard to keep your pants zipped. And mentally, if should be easy to stay faithful as well. We all have our weak moments when we think a passer-by is cute, but if you have full-blown fantasies about other people that you truly wish you could act out, then you need to re-evaluate your current relationship.

It seems like the whole world is cheating sometimes.

Thou shalt not be adulterous.
