Another message from Hilliary!

Hello Everyone!

The start of week 3 here in Uganda has begun. Amazingly, this week has started off wonderful on Saturday. A man here who works at the Baby Home bought a few of us tickets to see the Uganda verses Nigeria soccer game! It was amazing! The day started off wonderful. People travel here by scooters and motorcycles or bikes. So if you can image 3 white girls crammed on the back of a little scooter with a little Ugandan man driving you can image just how fun the day was. We kept bottoming out the scooter and he almost hit our legs off of a huge bus, but he just laughed and so did we hahahaha! Then as we made it to the stadium everyone was chanting and I’ve never been in such a high energy level as that game. We think sports games are big here in the U.S. but not after you’ve been to a foreign soccer game. The fact alone that there were only 20 white people in I bet a 10,000 person stadium was hilarious! Plus, all the Ugandans started cheering when we walked down the aisle to find our seats. Then during the game, us white folks got up and started dancing and before we knew it the whole stadium was dancing with us and everyone was hugging and kissing us on the checks, thanking us for coming and supporting their game! It was super fun and we all had a great time at the game and the fact that Uganda won 2-1 by making 2 penalty kicks! Also, a random fact about the game is that normally you get peanuts or hot dogs at a game right? Ha, not in Uganda. The concession stands there contain fried dough called chipatis, or you can get fruit like bananas, or if you really want to go crazy you can get an assortment of coffee beans. Which they don’t taste as well as they smell. They are really hard and taste really bitter. So my advice is stick with the hotdogs J

As for the prayer requests, I wanted to thank you all for emailing me back and letting me know that the mamas and the children are in your thoughts and prayers. The two children got cream and have recovered very well with their cut bottoms. As for the two girls with the teeth problem, there is still no infection at this time and hopefully will continue to heal properly. As for the mama who cut her eye, she is recovering well and didn’t lose any eye sight. So just know your prayers are working!

However, after writing that, I must ask you all to keep my health in your prayers still. I went to the clinic this morning after having terrible stomach pain for the past week. Since the doctors here never actually diagnose sicknesses they only write out prescriptions they told me that they think I have a worm inside of me. Ha, sounds yummy right?!? But thankfully like back home, I have been given antibiotics and I got de-worming medicine. Plus, the woman who is the nurse at the baby home is keeping me under her wing and will keep a close eye on me so no need to worry J

Another prayer request I have is that I just moved from the toddler room to a room called Baby 1. This room has children ages 1-1 ½ and this children are so developmentally small. Most children can’t crawl, in fact they can’t even stand up when holding onto things. They have very small legs and arms and even have trouble sitting up. After nannying for the little girl in Colorado named Zoe, I’m learning how healthy and well developed she was compared to these children. It’s very hard to deal with 10 crying babies who can’t do anything for themselves and who are so lost, lonely, and deprived of love. I’ve realized it’s impossible to calm 5 crying babies with only 2 arms. Amazingly enough, I’ve broken out my old vocal chords and started singing any song I could think of and I’m getting over my fear of singing in public J However, please pray for the strength to care for these children day in and day out. In one week the mamas are getting a break and going to a conference and so I will be in charge of the baby 1 room. This responsibility is a little overwhelming and I’m not sure how I’m going to change all the diapers, feed them, bath them, and love them. In fact today, one baby poured all his porridge on his face while another baby was peeing straight up out of his diaper and another was hitting his friend with his most prized weapon, “the rattle”. Hahaha so please pray that I find humor, grace, mercy, love and forgiveness to pour on each one of this little pumpkins.
Also, sorry but one last thought… there were 2 black mamba snakes in our yard and if you get bit by one you die, so please pray that we find them and kill them fast before anyone gets hurt walking through the yard at night. Hahaha that sounds like such a minor little prayer request, when I find myself writing it, but really that is a huge thing if one of us would die so maybe you should add that one to the top of your list. J

One last funny story before I go. The other day, Chelsea and I were helping the mamas get the 25 toddlers to bath and get into their pajamas. However, someone started taking off the childrens clothes before the mama had the bath water made and so there were 25 naked children running around the yard, chasing chickens, boys wearing the girls dress up shoes, and peeing all over. When Chelsea and I thought of how we were going to get them all back into their rooms and settled into bed we decided that first it might do our nerves good to help chase the chickens and let out our frustration and let me tell you what, that is one of the best stress relievers I have found. So when you find yourself over-swamped with work or problems, just go out and chase the chickens J

Thank you again everyone for your support and emails! When I come to the Internet café after a long day the emails make me smile and give me the encouragement I need.

I love you all so much!
XOXO

Hillary

P.S. The other night at a campfire I played the African drums with a man named Moses. He was pretty good and so he made up the lyrics as I banged on the instrument and we laughed so hard because we both had our hands in the air and we were making terrible music, but it sure was fun to learn about him and his culture.

…a continuation of Hillary’s adventures in part 1 and part 2.

Hello Everyone!

So it’s week two here in Uganda. I definitely love every bit of Africa; the slow pace, the people, the bright colors, and the music. I have so many funny stories to share. But before I do that, here are some prayer requests I have. Two of the toddlers have fallen on rocks and pushed most of their front teeth up into their gums. Sounds crazy? I know… I’m not sure how little children’s teeth can move so far up into their gums just by falling hard, but after seeing it with my own eyes, I am now a believer. Their isn’t really dental services around here and if there are and I don’t know about them the children won’t be receiving any care. So please just pray that their mouths will heal fast and they won’t get any infections in it. (Which will be a miracle since they don’t brush their teeth ever!) Also, two boys have gotten some weird rash/cut on their genital area and right now no-one is sure how or what is causing this. The boys just cry all day and you can see how much pain their in and yet the people here really don’t know what to do about it. Arnold, a little toddler who has the cutest face ever and whos head is shaped like a bicycle helmet (no joke!) is one of them who has this problem. The cutest thing about Arnolds head is that since the orphanage shaves all the boys heads every month Arnold can’t even hide his funny shaped noggin behind any hair J Also, one of the mama’s had a metal clothesline break and hit her eye so she will need prayer as her eye is recovering from that incident. Also keep praying for our health because other volunteers have gotten malaria recently and some other weird sicknesses that no-one diagnosis over here. If you get sick you go to the clinic and they never tell you what you have they just give you some weird medicine and tell you to take it. So I’m really hoping I don’t have to go to the clinic while being here. I’ve gotten quite a few mosquito bites, but none that have led into malaria. (Praise God!)

Here are some funny stories that have happened while being here.

Two days ago, George (my favorite little boy who’s 1 ½ years old) was standing by me as he was waiting for his bath and all of a sudden I felt this warm sensation on my bare foot. Little George thought it would be hilarious to pee on Auntie Hillary’s foot and then when I asked him if he was going su su (Ugandan word for pee) he just started laughing.

Peter a Ugandan man who helps out at the orphanage brought me two x-rays and said this to me in English. “We use these to make fine art” Hahaha in the midst of me trying to ask him if these were important and what he wanted me to do with them, it turns out he wanted me to cut things out of the x-rays to make stencils so that we could put it over paper and let the children paint over them to have shapes come out on the paper underneath. I have now learned a new tool for teaching using old x-rays!

When I was walking home one night, it was just about dusk and there were these 3 cows just standing in the middle of the road. I kept trying to dodge the one with big horns and whenever I walked to one side of the road one of the cows would run across and so we weaved in and out of each other for about 15 minutes as I was walking. Something that you definitely wouldn’t have happen to you everyday in America.

Also, in Uganda whenever you go to shake someone’s hand you have to do this really cool handshake. You go to shake their hand normally then you both move your hands up and then you shake again normally. It’s pretty funny, but I’ll teach you all when I come back!

As for me personally, this time with God has been really amazing. We have a prayer room in our house and I find myself spending more and more time there. God is teaching me a lot about who he’s made me to be, where he wants me to go in life, and how I need to be patient and wait on a lot of things. He’s also teaching me how when I make mistakes he still loves me and hasn’t given up. I really do appreciate everyone’s emails and they definitely make me feel very loved and supported back home so keep them coming!

I hope you are all enjoying America as much as I am enjoying this beautiful country and all the beautiful things in it!

XOXO
Hillary J

Letters from Africa, 2

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

You can read about Hillary’s arrival in Africa here. This is the email she sent after her first week as a missionary in Africa:

Hi Everyone!

First off, thank you so much for all of your emails! It’s been so wonderful to know that people back home are thinking about and praying for us! I’m going to try to make this an all inclusive email and answer everyone’s questions.

So for those of you that asked for prayer requests here are some:
- keep praying for our safety and health. So far we haven’t gotten sick at all :o)
- pray for the mama’s they work with these kids so much and its so hard some days when you have 30 children in a small area and no-one wants to listen or you have 10 toddlers all crying at once.
- pray that the lord will give me direction in my life about where he wants me to go after this trip is over. after being here and meeting different people i’ve learned that there are many places and things i could do. but i want to wait and see what the lord wants.

heres what has happened in the past week.

i came over to africa being really exhausted physically, emotionally, and mentally. after being here a week i can see how the lord has blessed me so much. i’ve gotten to hang out and play frisbee with the other volunteers, i’ve played football (soccer) with a lot of the kids at amani baby cottage, and i’ve went running one morning. on my run, i had a few little kids go running with me asking me for money, but it was nice because i had to tell him i didn’t have any with me and i wasn’t lying at all because my pants had no pockets.

however, there are lots of children here who go, “mzungu, please give us money” which means white person please give us money. sadly, if you gave money to each individual you would be broke within a days walk. so we bought candy and give them a piece of that and tell them that we love them, but can’t give them money.

heres a funny story. i fell asleep one night with my headphones on and then in the middle of the night i woke up and thought there was a bat flying around me and i was so worked up i was thrashing around only to find out one of my head phones came out of my ear and was hitting me in the face. hahahahaha

i also fell in love with a boy named george. we call him georgie porgie because he’s pretty fat. he’s always kinda crying or whining to be picked up but his face is the cutest thing ever. yesterday, i was trying to put 15 toddler boys to bed and georgie porgie kept melting my heart but pulling off half of his diaper and then going auntie and giving me the sliest little grin i’ve ever seen. then when it rained outside all afternoon we had a veggie tales dance party in the orphanage with the toddlers and george was my dance partner. he had such good moves i worked us a sweat :)

the little children here are definitely teaching me so much about being carefree, loving life, even if it means the same type of porridge every morning for breakfast and they are teaching me patience in every way possible. last week when i was trying to put the girls to bed in the evening there were a few that wouldn’t go to sleep and i was so tired so i just pointed my finger at the ones dancing in their bed and told them to lay down now. it wasn’t long after that that one of the little girls dancing started pointing her finger and me and talking sternly in ugandan hahahahahaha… i had no idea what she was saying but she softened my heart and i ended up laughing with them and gave them lots of kisses and hugs before leaving the room.

so thats how the weeks been so far. lots of kid time, fun time with the other volunteers, and i’m loving the slow paced life that has brought me back to having lots of time with god and people.

i love you all and miss you very much!
xoxo

Letters from Africa, 1

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Every once in awhile, you have the chance to be friends with someone who truly is an inspiration and who can make you feel better about your day, no matter how blue you feel. When I was in kindergarten (yep–a long time ago!), I met Hillary, and we stayed friends all through school. The picture to the left is from high school chemistry class (woah, we’re young!). Hillary is on the right, with the green container. What I remember most is that if someone was having a bad day, Hillary would try to make them laugh, even if it required doing something silly or embarrassing. She is the type of person that just lit up a room.

Hillary is now trying to light up the world. She ended up going to a Christina college in Colorado (I live in Pennsylvania), so we didn’t keep as close as some of my other friends who close schools nearby, but we did catch up from time to time, and what she did while in college was amazing. Hillary joined a number of missionary trips, traveling to places as far away as Romania to spread God’s word.

Today, Hillary is in Africa on another missionary trip. Please pray for her as she works to bring some of God’s love into the lives of the children there. She gave me permission to share with you all some of her emails, so you can read for yourselves what she is doing and what Africa is like:

Email Subject: IM IN AFRICA AND ALIVE
Email Body: HAHAHA…. Thought that subject line was pretty good. So just to warn you, the capitalization button on my computer is broke so i wont be capitalizing any of my letters during this email becuase i have to keep putting the caps lock button on and taking it off. so here’s the latest low down on my life.

the first flight from nyc to london was so much fun. christina and i sat by a guy in college who was returning to kenya where his family are missionaries there. he hadn’t been home for 2 years. we made a club sitting together for 7 hours. the name of our club was the 50s club haha.. we figured since we were all single and sitting in row 50 on the plane it would make for a club. :)

next we spent the day in london where we ate breakfast at a restaurant in the airport. the service was really really slow so christina and i got our bill and decided that if we would put money down we could leave. well we didn’t know that our bill was written to us in pounds and so our waiter comes running down the airport calling us to come back hahahahaha… finally the poor little guy caught up with us and he explained how we had to double the amount since you need more american money to equal british pounds. we laughed all day about that experience.

then we come to uganda on saturday morning. the plane ride from london to uganda was good… christina and i were cracking up at anything becuase we were so sleep deprived and excited to be going to africa. so we end up making it to entebbe where we found our driver named abdula who was a very cute ugandan man. he was about dads age and very happy to see us. ha, he went to pick up our bags and nearly fell over so we offered to carry them ourselves, but he refused and ended up so winded by the time we got to the car he started laughing and asked us if we brought the whole united states with us. :)

Weekend Homework #6

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I’m Christian, and so every weekend I’d like to given anyone who is willing to take it a “homework” assignment. They’ll be Christian in nature, but you can use these as a starting point to reflect you own religious beliefs. Stop back every Friday for your homework!

This weekend’s homework: Love your significant other.

Bible verses: “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. You love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” -John 13:34-35

Devotional: This week, I read an interesting post about accepting your partner’s differences and learning to grow together in love. The author really hit the nail on the head with this one. Many people look at the Bible as an old-fashioned stuck-up guide to life, but it’s so much better than that. Read the Song of Songs and you’ll get what I mean! What the Bible does say is that you have to appreciate your significant other and work at your relationship. And that’s exactly what RN’s post is talking about.

This weekend, go beyond telling your love that you care–show him or her your love. Pay to take him/her out to eat or to a movie. Give him/her a back rub, no strings attached. Bake him/her a favorite desert. Hold hands. Pick up some flowers on the way home from work. Pray together for a continued successful relationship.

God is love. God wants us to love one another. When we’re in a long-term relationship, that can sometimes be a bit difficult. This extends to friend and family relationships as well. Don’t forget to tell people that you love them and show this love in your actions.

How Well Do You Know the Bible?

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

After seeing the YouTube video “Interview with an Atheist,” I got to thinking–just how much do I know about my own religion and the Bible. Like most Christians, I haven’t even read the Bible straight through (although I am working on it). Faith is amazing, and you can certainly build your life around a very basic knowledge of Christianity and still call yourself a Christian, but here are ten questions that you should know how to answer…it’s always a good idea to understand your faith as completely as possible.

1. What are the ten commandment?
2. Can you recite John 3:16?
3. How many days passed before Jesus rose from the dead?
4. Who were the 12 disciples?
5. How many books are in the Bible, traditionally?
6. What does “gospel” mean?
7. What did God create one each of the seven days?
8. Which book of the Bible tells the story of the Apocalypse?
9. What is the golden rule?
10. Can you recite the Lord’s Prayer?

And now for some bonus questions–you may need a Bible to remember these answers!! If you can answer any of the below questions without a Bible, leave your answer as a comment!

- 1. Who was the oldest person in the Bible? How old did he/she live to be?
- 2. What was Paul’s name and job before becoming a Christian?
- 3. Who was sold into slavery by his older brothers?
- 4. What was written above Jesus on the cross?
- 5. Who was Abraham married to? What she their first child’s name?
- 6. Who did Jesus rise from the dead?
- 7. Who hid in a tree because he was so short he could not otherwise see Jesus?
- 8. Who baptized Jesus?
- 9. What was Jesus’ first miracle?
- 10. How long did it rain during the great flood? How long where Noah and his family on the arc in total?

The Starbucks Fiasco

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

starbucks.jpgWho knew coffee could create such a stir in the religious community? According to reports, the following message, printed on Starbucks coffee cups, has some Christians in a tizzy:

“Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the catastrophes we need to endure.” -Bill Schell

The cup is part of a campaign that’s been going on at Starbucks for years now to include insightful and interesting quotes from customers to spark debate and conversation. The fact that some people are upset at Starbucks for using this quote is exactly what is wrong in the Christian world today.

Five Idiot-Proof Reasons not to be Upset at Starbucks:

1. The quote is not against completely God. It is telling people that it is silly to take problems to God when he’s already given us the ability to handle the problems ourselves.

2. It recognizes that no one knows if God exists, but it does not specifically say that there is no God. It simply states the fact that we don’t know.

3. The opinion is specifically meant to spark debate. This cup’s quote gives you, as a Christian, an avenue for rebuttal to those around you. Speak your mind, don’t boycott Starbucks for allowing you to do so!

4. It is clearly stated on the cup that the opinion of Bill Schell is not the opinion of Starbucks. While they did make the choice to put the quote on the cup, they do not necessarily agree, and they are providing a forum on there website to discuss all of the quotes.

5. It’s a coffee cup.

Weekend Homework #5

Friday, May 11th, 2007

I’m Christian, and so every weekend I’d like to given anyone who is willing to take it a “homework” assignment. They’ll be Christian in nature, but you can use these as a starting point to reflect you own religious beliefs. Stop back every Friday for your homework!

This weekend’s homework: Get charitable!

Bible verses: “”Little children, let us love, neither in word nor with the tongue, but in deed and truth.” -1 John 3:18

“Become doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves with false reasoning. For if anyone is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, this one is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, and off he goes and immediately forgets what sort of man he is. But he who peers into the perfect law that belongs to freedom and who persists in it, this man, because he has become, not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, will be happy in his doing it.” - James 1:22-25

Devotional: We are taught that we cannot get to heaven through good works alone. However, charity is a rewarding part of life, and like most of us, I have recently found myself fairly busy with other obligations and, in effect, haven’t had “time” for charity. We need to make time. Whether it’s donating money to a local organization or volunteering yourself for a day, having charity in your life is important.

Last Black Friday, I did a special on charities where you could donate your money. Here’s the link.

Need even more inspiration? A number of celebrities make time in their lives, which are often busier than mine or yours, for charity. Here are just a few examples:

Rachel

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

In the Bible, Rachel was the mother of Joseph, who you may remember as the brother who was sold into slavery by his older half-brothers. Rachel was only able to marry Jacob after her worked for her father for 14 years. That’s some dedication! She must have been a pretty special lady.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to another Rachel. As part of this year’s celebration of Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day, I’ve invited a high school student from my community to write today’s post. I gave her free reign to right about whatever she wanted…and here’s what she has to say:

The Lord in My Life
By Rachel Fisher, a student from Line Mountain High School

cross.jpgI am a junior in high school who has been a Christian since the age of six and a regular church-goer. I was even raised in a nice Christian home where my parents would read bible stories to us at night when I was younger. This being said, I was very unaware and naive of what middle school, even high school, would be like for me. I could truthfully say that I thought that other people who I would come in contact with would not use profane language and they would be Christians.

I was wrong about that. Things changed as I became more mature and had to deal with tough times in life, such as when my younger sister, who has health problems, is admitted to the hospital. This is where I turned to God in my life and just leave things to Him because He is all-powerful.

My youngest sister was born when I was seven years old, but she was born months early. They had to do a C-section so that my sister would be born, and this was a scary point in my life because even though I did not know it until later, the doctors had lost both my mother’s and my sister’s vitals. Thanks to the Lord, both of them survived and I was given a little sister, even though she has many health problems and was hooked up to the monitors at a young age.

As I grew older, I started to pray to the Lord about my sister–to help her, because among her multiple health problems she has cerebral palsy and asthma. I just wanted her to be able to walk right. Her health problems did not stop her from loving the Lord as best as she could at a very young age. The stories of how delightful she was and how she told people about God made me think about my own life and how I should live my life for the Lord like there is no tomorrow because I do not have major health problems.

God has helped me through all the times my sister has been in the hospital by keeping her safe. This means that the Lord helps everyone through the rough times, but one has to know that sometimes what happens is not what you want to happen. The Lord knows what is right for that you and all you have to do is believe in him and trust him with your life.

Interview with an Atheist

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

When I was suffering on YouTube, I found this interesting video, “An Interview with an Atheist.” It raises some really thought provoking questions about Christianity and religion in general. He’s a pretty smart guy. You need to see this video:

Get Real Religion!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

I was talking to a group of women in my community and the topic was brought up about how, “God never gives you more than you can handle.” I got to thinking what on earth does that mean? I don’t believe that for one bit! It struck me as very naive` and a great way to keep yourself from active action to change or serve those in need in our community. What about the people who find themselves on the other end of a gun in their own hands-is that considered more than one can handle? What about children who are so tormented in public school that they snap and go off and shoot & kill people. Is that being given more than can be handled? What about the people who can’t fit in with the guidelines of societal standards and find themselves in jail , insane, profiting from illicit means or worse? It is this Pollyannaic thinking that ‘oh, everything happens for a reason and hopefully we learn from our mistakes’, that discounts the human frailty. What about the person who gets their life snuffed out by a reckless drunk driver? We already know that one puts life at risk when drinking & driving. Why does it take that person killing someone to make them stop doing destructive behaviors and have the reverence for life that was intended before they take an innocent life?

Life is. Life is impersonal. Life is chaos. We all know about being at the right place at the right time (or the wrong!). It is that which makes us essentially human that makes us contrive something from nothing (or everything) or make sense from the chaos. That which we would like to think is divine intervention, fate or destiny is merely a sort of crippled coping mechanism to the forces that we have no control over. Taking the responsibility for our free will also has an accountability factor that is often overlooked. If everything happens for a reason then we can quell our impulse to help hungry people in our community because well, by golly, God won’t give them anymore than they can handle, right? If everything happens for a reason we can rationalize away the needs, the cries, the sorrow and the lack all around us. I think the true context of “God never gives you more than you can handle,’ is that we are to find our niche` in society, our place to serve, in whatever way is our unique gift, and give it all we got with all the heart and love and sweat and determination you would give anything you want to thrive. I’m reminded of the woman who wanted to help the hungry children in her community. Everyday children came to her door begging for food because they were so impoverished they went hungry. She wasn’t a woman of means by any means, but she could afford a couple extra loaves bread a week and some jelly & peanut butter. She began making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for the kids. Soon the word spread that this woman was giving out PB & J sandwiches and dozens of kids were coming to her door, the numbers growing each day. She made more and more sandwiches and fed the kids that were hungry in her community. I can tell you, those kids were changed by her thoughtfulness, kindness and compassion. It’s the little things like that, that transforms neighborhoods into communities. A gift so simple, so meaningful and so basic. She is an inspiration to me.

Be inspired, take something on. Get out of your comfort zone. Help someone in need. Let your freewill be someone else’s lifeline. You never know when your unique kindness will help someone bend a little further and keep from breaking. We can do no great things. Only little things with great love.
