Maybe God is Making People Gay on Purpose
Every day, I see more and more controversy surrounding the growing homosexual population in America. Is it “right”? Should gay couples marry? Can a Christian nation welcome gays or would that chip away at the core of what we stand for? My friend Lyndsey, at Lez Keep it Real, recently talked about the upcoming presidential elections, and I can see easily that the GLBT debate is going to be a huge player for many Americans when choosing a candidate to endorse.
So I’m tackling the subject myself. What I say here is not based on the teachings of any church. It’s based on how I morally feel, taking into account my Christian upbringing. I hope that you do two things: 1) Read to the end before leaving a comment (positive or negative) and 2)open your mind to at least the exploration of the idea that maybe God is making some people gay on purpose.
Let’s take a look, first and foremost, at why we are the way we are, according to the Bible. And when I say “why we are the way we are”, what I really mean is why traditionally, a love/sex relationship is between a man and a women. I understand that this is not the case for everyone.
In the Bible, it starts with Adam and Eve. Now, as much as Christians are taught that the Bible is completely non-fiction, the fact of the matter remains that the Creation story and much of that Old Testament we know and love took place long before recorded history was possible. It may be the word of God, but it was written down by man. There are probably mistakes. Actually, there are probably a LOT of mistakes, and Bible scholars, even Christian Bible scholars, will agree to that. That’s just what happens when text is passed down orally and translated from language to language and copied by hand. There are mistakes.
But I digress. Back to Adam and Eve. God created Adam, and then, because he was lonely, God created Eve from a part of Adam. Now, why wouldn’t God simply create another male? It could have been Adam and Evan, right? Well, Christian belief tells us that God knows all that is and all that is to come. So, theoretically, God created Eve because females can conceive and give birth, and God knew that one day, this would be something Adam and Eve would need to do. Looking at it logically as well, if you were going to live in a garden with a single other human companion, you would want that companion to be different right? And, males and females are about as different as you can get (looking at things traditionally). So, one male and one female. That makes sense.
I’d like to note here that one female and one male make sense from the evolutionary perspective of things as well. You need both male and female for a race to survive.
And survival was what the world was all about once Adam and Eve left the garden. Without a male-female union, procreation wouldn’t be possible for mankind. Homosexuality wasn’t an option.
Generations grew up, reproduced, grew up, reproduced, etc. There is a mention of homosexuality in a few spots on this part of the Bible, but the most well-known it Leviticus 18:22:
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
This is almost identical to Leviticus 20:13. The basic gist is “homosexuality is a sin.”
But why? Murder is a sin because it hurts another person. Stealing is a sin because it is taking something from another person. Having another god is a sin because it means you’re defying the one true God. But why is homosexuality a sin? If you look at the Bible, God doesn’t say to us “Because I said so.” If there really is a cosmic plan, than homosexuality is a sin for a reason. It has to hurt you or someone else or God.
And, at that time, it did. Remember, the world is about survival. If all the males in a town were gay, that would mean the people of that town would die out. Same with the females. There needed to be male-female connections for the betterment of the human race.
Not only that, but in these times, homosexuality was largely about being sexual rather than being in love. Even today, that’s what some relationships are about (both homosexual and heterosexual ones), and I strongly disagree with this kind of activity. Yes, I do believe it is a sin. Why? Because sex becomes your god. It’s the same reason why I (along with many others) would consider something like compulsive gambling or alcoholism a problem. When you can’t control yourself and simply crave an activity day in and day out, that’s time that you should be spending loving God. And, if you’re gay simply because its easier to have male-male or female-female sexual experiences, than yes, I do think its a sin.
But I digress again. In short, the people living in the times of the Old Testament needed homosexuality to be a sin because it was hurting the human race.
But lets’ jump ahead over 2000 years to today. Why is homosexuality a sin today? I’ve already gone over the instances when I do think it is a sin (and that’s a comment about sex in general, not about gay sex…and I think most gay people would agree).
So that leaves the survival of the human race. Which, unfortunately, is not a problem anymore. I say “unfortunately” because the problem isn’t survival anymore, the problem seems to be that too many people are having unwanted children or cannot support the children they do have. Contraceptives are widely available, and yet teen motherhood, abortion, and giving children up for adoption are on the rise. There’s nothing wrong with having a big family - if you can support and love it fully. However, too many people are having babies that are unsupported, unloved, and unwanted.
And don’t you think God knows that? We’re taught that God loves us, and if God loves the human race, doesn’t he want to stop this birthing of unwanted children? Doesn’t it make sense that God is creating some of us to be gay, simply because it is impossible for a gay couple to conceive?
Consider the idea, just for a moment. It makes sense, for the survival of the human race. We don’t know when Christ will come to earth again, and although it may be tomorrow, it may also be millions of years from now. Until the Divine is ready for that moment, the world has to survive, and maybe - just maybe - this is His way of doing it.
Maybe.

Brilliant take … def. an angle I haven’t thought of before. Equally well-written. I hope people read through the entire post and take it in as a whole, and not just pick out random sentences here and there.

Kind of ironic that sin, in this instance, appears to be an evolutionary concept.

How about god made people gay because she wanted to?

I applaud you for writing about a difficult topic. I am still trying to sort out my own views on the matter.
That being said, I don’t understand your logic. If it’s possible that God is creating people to be gay now as a way to stem population, what does that mean about all the people who were gay in the past when the population did not need to be controlled? Were they not created gay?

Steve,
It’s an interesting debate. My whole thought process was that maybe we can’t look at “gay” the same today as in the past (and by “today” I mean the past several hundred years and by “the past” I mean, ancient Biblical times). There’s a lot of theories that not as many people were openly gay in the past because it wasn’t socially acceptable, but maybe there simply weren’t as many gay people in the past. Who knows, really?
Then there’s the debate over whether gay is a choice or if one is created gay. While I tend to believe that it’s a mix of the two, leaning more toward “creation” today, maybe it was choice in the past.
There’s a lot of different ways to explore this subject, and I’m definitely going to write more about it in the future!

Ok, that makes sense. It definitely is an interesting debate, often one without clear answers.
I read a great conversation on another blog a little while ago- the post had hundreds of comments as people talked. It’s really a great conversation, I would encourage you to check it out.
