Prayer Tips
Prayer tips? Why would anyone need prayer tips? And what does one do with prayer tips? Isn’t prayer supposed to be an “individual” type of thing? How can general prayer help me?
Yes, that’s my first reaction too. But really, finding religion is about being comfortable in your own beliefs, and if you belong to a religion that celebrates prayer, these prayer tips really can help you find that comfort you need. The more comfortable you are with praying, the better your relationship will be with the divine.
Prayer Tip #1: Schedule time for prayer. Praying is kind of like working out. If you don’t schedule time for it, you might just not do it. However, like working out, after you get into the groove, it can be a rush and really make you feel better about yourself. At least for a few weeks, schedule time every day to pray.
Prayer Tip #2: Don’t get into a habit. When we’re children, our parents may have taught us to pray each night before bedtime. We probably used the Lord’s Prayer or another easily-memorized prayer. You’re an adult now. You can still say the Lord’s Prayer if that’s what you want to use, but think about the meaning, don’t just rattle it off.
Prayer Tip #3: Be a friend. It’s easier to talk to our friends than it is to pray sometimes, unfortunately. Try to think of prayer as a talk with a good friend. Thank the Divine for the good things in your life, just like you’d thank a friend for a birthday gift. Ask the Divine questions about your life, just like you’d ask your friend if a certain pair of jeans makes your butt look big. Ask for favors of the Divine, just like you’d ask your friend if you could borrow a CD. Compliment the Divine, just like you’re tell a friend that his car was wicked-cool. God likes to know that He/she is wicked cool.
