Week One of the GCH

by

Ok, awhile back I posted that since I had recently moved, I was starting “The Great Church Hunt” to find a new place of worship. On my first try, I got the times messed up and missed the service. Then the holidays stepped in, and with constantly traveling and such to see friends and family the GCH was put on hold.

That makes today the first Sunday of my GCH.

Church in question: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kingston, PA
Pastor: Rev. Patrick W. Poole

I got there at about 9:50, so as to not be late for the service like last time, when I thought it started at 10:30. I followed some people in the door, since I wasn’t sure where I was going, and when I got to the sancuary, it wasn’t very full. By not very full, I mean that there were about 5 old ladies sitting in two pews.

So I kind started to panic, thinking that I missed the service again or that I was at a Sunday School class or something, but thankfully I spotted an usher at the door. I asked, “Is this the main service?” And he started talking all sorts of gibberish. And by gibberish, I mean that he was a mentally challenged guy that I couldn’t understand at all, but who patted my hand very nicely and pointed toward the pew. Great.

Turns out that I was in the right place, I guess I was just running early and overall, the congregation isn’t that big. More people trickled in, so I didn’t feel quite so bad. I was worried there for a moment.

The pastor stood up to give announcements, and was like, “And I see some guests in our presense, so welcome and we hope to see you back every Sunday.” Ok, there’s like 50 people tops at this service, and mostly families or older couples. Duh he means me. Everyone just looked at me. Awkward much? Yes.

The service itself was nice, and he gave a short and easy-to-follow sermon, which was nice as well. When they did “Be be with you,” it lasted ten minutes, which was also awkward. Everyone took the time to socialize with every other person in the sanctuary, and there was a line of people just waiting to shake my hand. Nice, but like i said, awkward.

Next week, I’m off to try another service. Will I be back to Holy Trinity Luthern Church? Perhaps. They are having a huge ‘ghetti dinner fundraiser for the community. Yum-o, in the words of my favoritate chef. Is this a church where I want to become a member? Probably not.

We’ll see.
