Witches?
With the cover for the new Harry Potter book recently being announced, the Christian masses are starting to mumble again. Of course, everyone pretty much accepts that Harry Potter is really a way of life these days, but there will still be some protester and some children deprived of the books. Why? One word–witchcraft.
It’s the age-old debate about witchcraft in literature–is it corrupting our children. Some hard-core Christians say yes. Harry Potter features evil creatures that are not vanquished by the power of God, but rather by a child’s magic. The witchcraft also teaches children to wish they could perform magic, which was once linked to worship of Satan.
Others, including myself, believe that’s all bologna. If you’ve raised your children in a Christian home with Christian values, he or she will understand that Harry Potter is fantasy long before he or she is old enough to read it. Harry Potter may not be classic literature, but it is rekindling children’s interest in reading.
What do you guys think?

I have to say that I think the Harry Potter series is wonderful. While I do agree that children need to grow up with strong values, whatever those may be, I also feel that if they don’t believe in a touch of magic that their lives will be sadly missing something.

I love the Harry Potter books and feel the stance against it by the religious right is astoundingly stupid.
Not only is it teaching children to read and as you say rekindling their interest in literature, it’s an age old story of good vs evil… with good prevailing in the end.
These tales have been told for generations and you would think that devout Christians could see the sense in teaching children the values of right against wrong, and good vs evil.
Thanks for the link Allison

I love the Harry Potter books and read them myself. LOL We are *gasp* witches, and my sons can still see that the books are purely fiction. Personally we love the fact that it is a child’s magic that can overcome the evil, it gives us a chance to talk about the purity and innocence of children verses adults.

Amen! I’m a born again, bought by the blood, daughter of Christ - and I own every Harry Potter book - and plan to buy the next. Not only do my grandchildren read the series, I read it to the younger ones.
Can anyone say “Lion, Witch, Wardrobe”?
